As a natural light wedding photographer, I need to know how to work in any condition. However… given 100 % creative freedom, every shoot would take place in that last hour before the sun goes down. Also called, golden hour.
Side note… golden hour also occurs in the first hour after the sun comes up. Are you a morning person? Extra large double double and I’m there
During golden hour the light temperature changes to give a much warmer feel to your images. Skin tones appear smoother, the sky turns a beautiful warm colour, and landscapes look saturated with radiant colours that bring your images to life. Of course colour temperatures can be altered in camera or with post production techniques, but it’s just no substitute for the real thing.
How to use golden hour to your advantage?…
Shoots with scheduling freedom such as engagement, family or portrait sessions should be timed with the correct light. The only trick here… it’s super important to show up on time. Once the light is gone, it’s gone! For weddings, this isn’t always as easy because the day is running on a schedule. However, I always encourage my clients to allow for 10 minutes where I can pull them aside just as the sun is setting. Usually this is a nice moment that they can enjoy together, away from the reception.
The moral of this post; work with your photographer (who I hope is me!) on the important details of planning a shoot and you can have gorgeous, glowing images too.
